"Every Body Matters"
“Steering clear of judgment and criticism, author Gary Thomas keeps the focus of this important discussion on the positive impact physical fitness can have on your spiritual and emotional growth. Using the engaging stories of everyday people, Thomas illustrates how becoming physically fit can lead to increased sensitivity to God’s voice, renewed energy for God’s work, greater joy for living and a fortified soul better able and more willing to serve and love others.” (back cover)

So many of us try to keep our spiritual and physical lives separate, as if one has no impact on the other. Mr. Thomas uses a Biblical and practical approach to illustrate how these two areas depend upon one another for success. He refers to both Biblical and secular sources, both modern and historical. Mr. Thomas’ emphasis is on the spiritual and health benefits of physical activity, not the outward appearance.

I gave Every Body Matters 5 stars. Read it for yourself and see if you aren’t motivated to make some changes in your activity level so you can give better service to God.

'As Silver Refined'

’What if things you call disappointments are really His appointments—events God is using to make you more like Christ? What if your circumstances are actually the flames of His grace, intended to melt and burn away the undesirable elements in your life, leaving you pure and radiant—like refined silver?’

“Kay Arthur guides us to biblical truths that will help break the cycle of discouragement, depression & despair that often accompanies life disappointments”, trials and tests. Through the use of Scripture, as well as other references, Mrs. Arthur gives the tools needed to use our disappointments as opportunities to grow stronger in our faith and likeness to Him. The study guide included in my copy of “As Silver Refined” included a study guide, which further emphasized each chapter. This reader embraced the opportunity to learn more of what the Bible teaches and enjoyed the challenge that came with the thought provoking questions.

Everyone faces disappointment at some point in life. This would be ideal for individual, small groups, or Sunday School study. Kay Arthur reminds us of the tools needed to walk through the ‘fires of life’ without giving the enemy the opportunity to be successful in his attempt distract us from our focus on God.

‘Make His Peace Your Peace’

“A Year With Jesus” by R.P. Nettelhorst
This book is a great devotional with daily readings and reflections on the words Jesus spoke. Each day contains Scripture and reflection in an easy to read style. The author includes a table of contents with ten different topics Jesus spoke/taught about. This book is a wonderful tool to learn more about following Jesus; living as He taught and sharing His message.

I liked how there are no dates on the pages allowing the user to start any time during the year. The one page per day format appeals to me as well. This book could be a great devotional for couples or families with older children. Spending time with the words Jesus spoke will be life changing.

Ascent From Darkness by Michael Leehan
Ascent From Darkness is a true story about Mr. Leehan's service to Satan. Mr. Leehan gives a descriptive account of his twenty years of service to Satan. He also shows how through those years, God was working to save Mr. Leehan from Satan’s hold. The transformation of Michael is nothing short of miraculous!
On a scale of one to five, I would rate this book a three. The book is well written, just didn’t hold my interest, for some reason.

Now I Walk on Death Row by Dale S Recinella

What happens when a wealthy, well-known Wall Street finance lawyer hits rock bottom? In this true story of Dale Recinella a faithful servant to God is born. God works in a mighty way & Dale & his family make a commitment to follow Jesus no matter the cost. Eventually this leads Dale to minister to death row inmates.

Sister Helen Prejean says it best: “Dales’ story is a bold reminder that no life should be treated lightly. In the weighty matters of justice & mercy, Dale chose to follow Jesus, who sided with the poor, the dispossessed & the despised. I hope what you read here impassions you to do the same.”

Dale and his family are examples to all of us who call ourselves Christian. I recommend this to anyone wanting to see a modern day example of Christ-like living.

"The Truth About Dating, Love & Just Being Friends"
by Chad Eastham
If your older preteen or teenager will read this book, Mr. Eastham provides some real life insight into the issues surrounding this tumultuous time of a young person’s life. He writes in a way this age group will both appreciate and relate to. He gives sound advice combining humor and education. Most importantly Mr. Eastham gives godly advice without being ‘preachy’ in doing so.
This book is well written and informative, I would recommend it to the 12-15 year age bracket. I could see this being very useful in a small group setting or with homeschoolers as there is plenty of room for discussion and Mr. Eastham provides questions with space for answers throughout the book.
I gave this book to my sixteen year old step daughter to read which she grudgingly did. She said it was a good book, just not anything she was interested in reading. Perhaps because at this age teenagers think they have all the answers?

 Will You Outlive Your Life?
"Out Live Your Life" by Max Lucado

Max Lucado eliminates any excuse the reader might have in order to explain how each of us can make a difference in the world. He uses examples in history as well as from the Bible. The study guide included in the back of the book is thought provoking with practical ideas for action. The reader will realize real change is possible one person at a time and that no effort is too small. We are reminded that when showing love, kindness, & compassion to those in need, we are doing so just as if to Jesus.

I recommend this book to only those willing to do his/her part to make the world a better place. It is unlikely one would read this book, put it on the shelf and forget about it.

Life Changing!
"same kind of different As me." by Ron Hall & Denver Moore

I enjoy reading true stories & this is what prompted me to choose this book to read and review. Little did I know how I was going to be effected by it. I cannot remember when I read such a powerful book; one that exemplified living a godly life, each & every day. This is a book that shows with such clarity how the obedience to God of one can change many.

Debbie Hall became a woman of God. She was not just a hearer of God's Word, but also a doer. She was a woman who would obey God, no matter that it took her to the dregs of society. She showed love to those many of us would rather not even think about. Debbie went against society and renewed her commitment to her husband, to her marriage. The love she showed Ron, her husband, & Denver, the untouchable homeless man, was unconditional. This love produced great results.

The candidness of Ron & Denver is to be admired. God's work in their lives is evident by their words & their actions. When you read this book, do so knowing that your life will be forever changed for it.

"Flight to Heaven"

I perused the list of books available for review from Bethany House Publishers & 'Flight to Heaven' by Capt. Dale Black immediately caught my eye. It intrigued me, because of its title, and the description: 'a journey to heaven--and back'. Of course, I was also excited to read about an encounter with heaven, what Christian doesn't wonder what heaven looks like?

Captain Black does a wonderful job of describing his life prior to the crash. He was 19yrs old and accomplished the first part of his dream: he was a licensed pilot. Everything was falling into place, leading Capt Black on the path of his future. Everything was falling into place, that is, until that fateful day, when the Piper Navajo twin engine airplane crashed just seconds after taking off. There were 3 people on that plane, Capt Black was the lone survivor.

This is not just another 'near death experience', 'here's what heaven looks like' book. Dale's candor in the inadequacy of words to describe what he saw is to be admired. The change in him is evident throughout the book, he becomes 'a doer of the Word', not just a hearer. The very first person he remembers is a nurse, who he felt great love for, not a human love, but a love for her heart, a concern for her soul. He recounts his renewed faith, his eagerness to really know God, his struggles, his pride, and his heartfelt cries out to God with vivid details. He shares the struggles as he recovered, both physically & spiritually.

While God's will was for Captain Black to not only walk again, but also to realize his dream to become a commercial pilot, we need to remember our dream is not always what God has planned for us. I can see how some could become discouraged when their dream is not realized. Just as Capt Black finally surrendered his will to God, we must be willing to do this, whole heartedly, no matter the outcome, knowing that His plans are better than we can imagine.

I would be surprised if anyone reading this book is not challenged to look at their own spiritual walk. Are we all living the life God has for us, or have we held on to 'our' dream? Are we missing the blessings one receives only by being totally obedient to God? Are we living in faith, knowing that God is leading us? This book is as thought provoking as it is an interesting account of one man's experiences.

On a personal note, I ordered this book in late June, the timing of receiving it could only be divine. Less than 1 week ago, the son of a good friend of mine fell from a ladder. He still has little if any feeling from his waist down. Like Capt Black's, Ben's family has been told his recovery will take years. This young man is 21yrs old & I've known him since he was born. Like Captain Black, Ben is also very athletic and active. The entire time I was reading this book, Ben kept coming to mind. Ben is a Christian, was helping his church renovate a house when his accident occurred. Will you join with me in praying for Ben, as he goes through his recovery process and for whatever God has planned for him?

                                                                      "Captivating"
                                                               by John & Stasi Eldridge

This book looks into the depths of woman: why they were created, God's purpose for creating us and how our past impacts our present. The differences between women, as well as the differences between men & women are discussed in depth. The authors address necessary things in a way that does not put even more pressure on women, nor make them feel guilty. The authors do a good job in exploring femininity by way of the heart.

This is a good read for the woman who is struggling in her relationships, including her relationship with God. It is eye opening to discover why women were created, our purpose and how many times women buy into society's lie that to be feminine is to be weak.

"Plain Paradise"
by Beth Wiseman

I typically do not choose to read fiction but chose this book for some light reading. I must admit, it is very typical of most fiction I have read, with some twists & turns but in the end, everyone lives happily ever after. After all, this is what we want from light reading, right?

The main character is Linda, a 17yr old Amish girl, who finds out she is adopted & her birth mother wants to meet her. The author did a great job of keeping me wondering if Linda would eventually choose the English world over the Amish. She did an excellent job of describing the struggles Linda went through. The author included, without it being out of place, the role God & her faith played in Linda's life & the decision she finally made.

It was interesting to see the change in Linda's adoptive mother towards her birth mother. The author did not try to sugarcoat her thoughts & feelings, her struggles & finally her acceptance. One can relate to these feelings and how satan builds on them. I found myself often understanding the emotions & wondering if I would be so obedient to God's leading.

I read this book for entertainment and was not disappointed. The author does an excellent job of describing the turmoil in each of the characters in this book. She also shows how each member of the tight knit community affects & is affected by one another. I think teenage girls and maybe mature preteens would enjoy & also learn some valuable lessons from this book.

"How to Reach Your Full Potential for God by Charles F. Stanley"

I chose this book to review because, like many Christians, I strive to serve God to the fullest of my capabilities. I was not disppointed in the contents of this book. Dr. Stanley has written in plain language what gets in our way of reaching our full potential for God and how we can overcome these obstacles.

In the very first chapter Dr. Stanley gives four great truths. After reading these truths, one can hardly answer 'no' when he then asks 'Do you want to reach your full potential?' He goes on to challenge us to see ourselves as God created us to be, not as others have told us we are. Dr. Stanley goes on to list and explain 7 hurdles we must overcome in order to reach our full potential. The bulk of the book explains the 7 essentials related to the pursuit of our God-given potential, as well as Biblical and practical ways to achieve these essentials. Dr. Stanley ends the book with a chapter titled 'The Best is Yet to Come!', as we all know to be true.

I recommend this book to anyone who is truly interested in living their life fully in service to God. Dr. Stanley does a great job in showing us how this can be achieved in our daily lives. I would not recommend reading this book unless you are willing to be uncomfrotable as you go through these changes as you reach your full potential for God.

"NKJV Greatest Stories of the Bible"

This is a beautifully bound, hard back book with an heirloom appearance. One gets an excellent overview of the Bible when finished with the reading of this book. This is a collection of 'stories' from the Bible rather than the entire Bible word for word. The author has not changed the wording of the New King James Version of the Bible, a fact not lost on this reader. There are 250 stories in this book, most only 2 or 3 pages long. I found both the table of contents & the index a useful tool when searching for specific events/people.

When I first started reading, I was reminded of all the stories I was taught while growing up & then taught to my own children. As I continued to read, I often thought how helpful this book would have been while my children were growing up. I will definitly read from it to my grandchildren when they visit.

I can see this being a great family devotional book, with each chapter or chapters giving plenty of discussion topics. It would take little effort to incorporate other activities to go along with each story for any ages. The chapters are short enough to keep the attention of younger children, who still enjoy being read to but have a longer attention span than toddlers & preschoolers. Older children & teens would benefit from the review of what the author considers the more important events from the Bible.

What I did not like about this book had nothing to do with it's content but rather my own approach to reading. It was difficult for me to remember this is not the Bible in it's entirety. I tend to read not for enjoyment but to learn so I had to change my mindset. Once I changed the way I read this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
